News From the Ranch, Episode 1201 from Prairie Moon Quilts

I haven’t posted a Ranch news update in awhile. It’s hard to keep up with everything! We’ve downsized and don’t have cattle here any more, unless we’re babysitting cattle for other people, which happens sometimes — we use them to keep our pastures in shape.

The horses are doing great — fat and sassy:

The goats got the run of the place nearly all summer, since the cows are gone. They loved it. And I snapped this photo out the landing window one day of Ranger sitting like a dog — it was so funny. I guess he ...

News From the Ranch, Episode 1927 from Prairie Moon Quilts

Christi reminded me that I haven’t posted about the goats and pets for a while now, and she’s right, so I figured I’d better update you all on the State of the Ranch!

My Cowboy has not let me out of the house much since the first of the year. We got a lot of snow, which melted partway, then turned to ice. By the time it was gone, we’d had another big snowfall, and he’s afraid I’ll fall — or get knocked down by the goats — and with my currently unrecovered broken wing, he ...

Happy New Year! from Prairie Moon Quilts

We’re standing on the threshold of a brand new year!

We’re startin’ it out here with a bang — we’re having a major ice and snow storm!

The goats won’t come out of their huts, the dogs won’t leave the porch, the cows and horses won’t leave the barn, and My Cowboy won’t let me out of the house. And I’m holding my breath and crossing my fingers and praying we don’t lose power.

I always use January 1st as my planning day, so I’m at my desk and computer making ...

News From the Ranch, Episode 1823 from Prairie Moon Quilts

Merry Christmas from all of us here at Prairie Moon Ranch! And if you don’t celebrate Christmas, I hope you are at least enjoying the holiday season as a time to slow down, take a breather, and enjoy family.

Our family is not gathering this year. I need to keep My Cowboy safe, and our father just turned 86 years old, so we’re protecting him, too. And we’re usually not a family who does things for Christmas in a big way, anyway, so it’s not a big deal for us to skip one meal together. I ...

News From the Ranch, Episode 1792 from Prairie Moon Quilts

It’s been a rough month of June here on the ranch, and June is only half over. Like My Cowboy says, “When it rains, it pours.” We seem to go along real smoothly for quite awhile, then a bunch of bad stuff happens all at once.

Back in the winter, when I had my foot in a boot, and My Cowboy was having to do winter chores all alone, even tho he’s the one with congestive heart failure, we had a serious discussion about downsizing our little ranch. We decided to get out of the cow/calf operation ...

It’s Cowboy Poetry Week! from Prairie Moon Quilts

All week this week.

Usually, local libraries get in on the action, but they’re all closed this year. But that shouldn’t stop you from looking it up online and getting a little taste. Their web site, cowboypoetry.com, has lots of info, and their Facebook page has lots going on, especially this week. Or visit their blog for all that’s going on most recently.

This year’s poster image is a painting by Teal Blake, called “Ranch Water”:

I’ve made some wonderful connections with a few really nice folks this way ...

News From the Ranch, Episode 1776 from Prairie Moon Quilts

Well, I accidentally took today off! The world just kinda caught up to me all at once, and it turned out to be too much for me. Even tho it’s been a beautiful day out, I went back to bed and buried my head under the covers.

One week ago yesterday, I came in from evening chores to the news that my brother had passed away quite suddenly from a massive heart attack while at work. I had just talked to him the Saturday before, and of course, you never imagine that it will be the last time. He ...

News From the Ranch, Episode 1772 from Prairie Moon Quilts

Well! Aren’t things in quite a mess right now?

I was really looking forward to spring, for flu season to die down, and being able to get out and about again, but with all that’s going on, that’s simply out of the question.

Oddly, the COVID-19 pandemic has not changed too much for us here on the ranch — yet. I’ve pretty much had us in isolation since the end of last October because I’m scared for My Cowboy to catch even a cold, or especially the flu.

With all his various health problems, and his ...

Happy New Year! from Prairie Moon Quilts

The start of a fresh new decade! Do you have big plans for it? I do . . . but we’ll see how that goes.

Seven years ago, we had just moved in here, and here’s what I posted on January 2, 2013.

So for an update on all of that, let’s see . . .

We had just gotten our internet hooked up here, and now we actually have an even better service since they installed fiber-to-the-home a while back.

Our new furnace has given us fits ever since it was installed, so we’ve had to have the repairman out at ...

News From the Ranch, Episode 1739 from Prairie Moon Quilts

It’s been awhile since I posted a News From the Ranch episode. It’s been quite a year around here. Last time I updated, the snow was just getting over for spring, and now, we’re supposed to start getting snow again this week. I’m just not ready! But then, I’m never ready for snow — I don’t like it one bit.

In goat news, we found all our babies from this year good homes. Three of them actually went to be therapy goats for a little boy with autism! I’m so proud of our babies ...
